Modern Family Sneak Peek: We were treated to a hilarious scene from next Wednesday’s episode, in which Phil and Claire are celebrating their anniversary. The kids decide to treat them with breakfast in bed, but get more than they bargained for. The following words were used: “zesty,” “dad was winning” and “traumatized.” Use your imagination.

Wednesday Night Comedy: Moments before the session was to begin, ABC announced pickups for The Middle, Modern Family and Cougar Town. (Notice the absence of Better With You.)“We really stood by our Wednesday comedy block,” said ABC Entertainment Group President Paul Lee, who gave credit to the showrunners and stars of the “underrated” The Middle. Lee also gave props to Cougar Town despite the fact that it loses a chunk of Modern Family‘s audience every week. “Eight on it’s own is a really nice rating,” he said, adding, “We’re pleased with the numbers at 8:30 and 9:30.” Lee also waved off concern about the overexposure of Modern Family thanks to repeats and multiple viewing platforms. “It’s place on the network is at 9 o’clock on Wednesday nights,” he said. The network has “no intention of having more originals during the week.”

Lee also believes “many dramas that come out fully formed. … Comedies, typically, it takes time for that group to find itself.” And plenty of comedies are doing just that, according to Lee, who said, “It’s a good time for comedy in America.” ABC will try to capitalize on that by expanding into the 10 p.m. hour when Cougar Town and Happy Endings take over the slot. Lee thinks the tone of Happy Endings should be a good fit, but if the experiment fails, he hopes to create a second night of comedy as early as next fall.

More Pickups: Also getting a vote of confidence in the form of a renewal are Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice and Castle, which Lee said “really showed its metal this year.”

“[Castle] hits the target of our brand,” he went on. “We have a really powerful procedural there.”

It seems the Walkers are winding down for their final family dinner fight. While ABC hasn’t officially said anything, several signs point to this possibly being Brothers & Sister‘s final season:

1. ABC ordered 18 episodes instead of the usual 22. “In my negotiation, I asked, ‘Does 18 mean it’s the last season?’ I would love to know. I feel like this is the last season, but I don’t know for sure,” Rachel Griffiths told TV Guide Magazine.

2. Budget cuts — after four seasons, a cast this big makes for an expensive show — mean we won’t be seeing every actor in every episode. Griffiths is signed on for 17 episodes and added that “we should expect to see less Walker family meetings, requiring the whole cast’s attendance.” Rumor has it Saul and Justin will also not be around as much.

3. The show has already said to goodbye to Balthazar Getty, Sarah Jane Morris and Robe Lowe. Now comes word from Give Me My Remote that Emily VanCamp will only be in a handful of episodes next season. The story well for her character, Rebecca, and husband Justin has been dry for quite some time now, so it’s not surprising that the writers want to shake things up. But judging from Michael Ausiello’s interview with VanCamp, it seems the decision to leave was hers. “I really feel like Rebecca has run her course,” she says. “And the deal I was offered this year was for two more years, and I just felt like since renegotiations were happening that maybe it would be the right time to move on.” Hopefully, bigger and better things than a Hallmark movie are in store for her.

4. VanCamp isn’t the only one who seems ready to move on. Should the show come to an end in spring 2011, Sally Field told TV Guide Magazine, “We’ll be real ready. We’re tired!”

If this is indeed the last season, I hope ABC gives the writers enough time to craft a proper series finale. And I’ll be ready to let it go. I still watch the show and thought last season was an improvement overall, but I’d rather the show sign off before it’s overstayed its welcome like some of these shows:

Emmys

With the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards airing tomorrow night on CBS, I figured it was finally time to offer my last minute Emmy picks. But as is the case every year, looking at the list of nominees just made me irate about all the worthy snubs. So instead of just offering my pick for who should win, I’m also listing one person or show that should have been nominated.

Just to clarify, my picks are not predictions as to who I think will win, but simply who I would vote for.

BEST DRAMA SERIES

Big Love
Breaking Bad
Damages
Dexter
House
Lost
Mad Men

My pick: Big LoveMad Men is an amazing show, but the last season of Big Love was full of revelations, twists and some of the best writing on TV.

Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler of "Friday Night Lights."

Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler of "Friday Night Lights."

Should have been nominated: Friday Night Lights. The show gracefully rebounded from a good, not great, second season to reach near season one levels of quality.

BEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES

Simon Baker, The Mentalist
Gabriel Byrne, In Treatment
Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad
Michael C. Hall, Dexter
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Hugh Laurie, House

My pick: Jon Hamm. Mysterious, complex, confident, broken. Hamm’s Don Draper is one of TV’s most engaging puzzles.

Should have been nominated: Kyle Chandler, Friday Night Lights. He says more with a look than most actors do with a monologue.

BEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES

Glenn Close, Damages
Sally Field, Brothers & Sisters
Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: SVU
Holly Hunter, Saving Grace
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men
Kyra Sedgwick, The Closer

My pick: Elisabeth Moss. Peggy Olsen and Moss came a long way last season, climbing up the workplace ladder after giving up the child she didn’t know she was pregnant with.

The ladies of Big Love.

The ladies of "Big Love."

Should have been nominated: It still surprises me that not one actress from Big Love was nominated for an Emmy. From Amanda Seyfried’s daughter to the sister wives to the women of the compound, the female cast of Big Love is uniformly spectacular. It’s nearly impossible to single out a sister wife from among the show’s three leading ladies: Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloë Sevigny and Ginnifer Goodwin. If we were talking about season two, I would have picked Goodwin, whose Margie found a new sense of confidence within her place in the marriage and her own love story with Ana. But in season three, Tripplehorn’s Barb broke my heart, revealing her true self to the world and losing her family and childhood religion in the process.

I also must mention January Jones of Mad Men, who was fantastic last season as she finally worked up the nerve to confront Don.

Which events will you be attending?

If clothes play a big part in first impressions, then these characters have definitely left an imprint on our hearts and minds. Every week, they wow us with their stylish fashion ensembles and make us head for the nearest knock-off rack. Some of them look to the past for inspiration. Others mix and match today’s trends with classic items. Whatever their fashion philosophy, all of them are some of today’s best dressed TV characters.

10.) Bree Van De Kamp, Desperate Housewives
A throwback to Jackie O, Bree’s (Marcia Cross) style is prim, proper and conservative. If that sounds a lot like Gossip Girl‘s Blair (see below), then all is as it should be. The two definitely share some style basics, but you won’t find any fiery red tights on Bree. That’s not say that Bree is boring. Who needs red tights when you have fiery red hair, which looks fabulous with all the colors of the rainbow? Plus, Bree’s ladylike, Martha Stewart-inspired wardrobe of cardigans, pencil skirts and pointy heels is sexy in a uptight, librarian sort of way.

9.) Nancy Botwin, Weeds
If all suburban pot dealers dressed like Nancy (Mary-Louise Parker), then we might have a very big problem on our hands. Like her life, Nancy’s clothes are far from glamorous, but what she lacks in glamor, Nancy more than makes up for by avoiding the mommy curse. No high-waisted jeans or pleated pants here. Feminine tops and casual day dresses are the order of the day for picking up the kids, running errands and negotiating with fellow drug dealers. Nancy knows that if you want to intimidate the competition, a little leg topped with a chunky sandal doesn’t hurt.

8.) Joan Holloway, Mad Men
While everyone else is trying to evoke the past in their fashions, Joan (Christina Hendricks) is in the past, the 1960s to be exact. When you get to wear dresses cinched at the waist in bold colors like bright red, cobalt blue and forest green from top to knee-length and rich fabrics, it pays to be stuck in the past. With her fair complexion and red hair, every brightly colored piece of clothing looks even more vibrant. Most stunning? A fire-engine red, knee-length dress with a peach lip on an actress who isn’t rail thin.

7.) Daniel Meade, Ugly Betty
Barney may have found his suit match in Daniel (Eric Mabius). Not only do Daniel’s suits fit his body like a tee, but he’s not afraid of color either. It’s not unusual to see Daniel “working” at the office in a gray suit with a boldly colored purple shirt or pink tie. A good suit tells everyone who’s boss, and in his perfectly tailored ones Daniel is confident, stylish and downright sexy. With suits specifically handmade for him by the Ocean’s Eleven tailor and suits from British designer Ozwald Boateng, there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be.

6.) Wilhelmina Slater, Ugly Betty
Sticking to neutral colors like white, black and beige, Wilhemina (Vanessa L. Williams) is effortlessly stylish whether in or out of the office thanks to form-fitting suits, sleek dresses and luxurious sweaters. You have to love a woman who fashionably pulls off a white cashmere and faux fur cape, white turtle neck and white boots while running away from prostitutes. Sometimes, the devil does wear white and looks good while doing it.

5.) Samantha Newly, Samantha Who?
The great thing about Samantha’s (Christina Applegate) ensembles is that they don’t look like they took too much time or effort to put on. Blouses and a pair of trousers or a pencil skirt keep things simple at work while soft, feminine dresses with no muss, no fuss provide a chic, yet simple look for a night out. The most interesting pieces come in the form of the great winter coats that keep Sam warm in chilly Chicago, where the show takes place. That’s also what costume designer Lori Eskowitz-Carter told NY Daily News she spent most of the wardrobe budget on.

4.) Barney Stinson, How I Met Your Mother
Men, take note. Ill-fitting shirts and jeans are out. It’s time to suit up, and Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) is here to show you how with his sophisticated wardrobe of suits, suits and more suits. He knows that when you want to make an impression, be it on the girl at the bar or your boss, a clean, sharp suit is the way to go. Take a cue from the always polished Barney and invest in a well-dressed future. Girls, you too can get in on the act. Barney is so well-dressed, he even inspired his friend Robin to suit up, and the effects were spectacular.

3.) Charlotte “Chuck” Charles, Pushing Daisies
It’s fitting that in a series that seems to adhere to no specific time period, the fashion of its characters doesn’t adhere to any specific era either. When the show began, 1950s style dresses in vibrant colors and floral prints adorned Chuck (Anna Friel). In one particularly memorable episode, she topped a voluminous red dress with a matching hat and large, black sunglasses in a nod to both Audrey Hepburn and Amélie. When it wasn’t hats and sunglasses, Chuck was bringing back the scarf as a headwrap. Alive again dead girls have to stay inconspicuous, after all. As the show finished out its season, Chuck’s style began to evoke more of the 1960s hippie vibe with tights and mod minidresses, but it never lost its touch for timeless elegance and perfectly chosen accessories.

2.) Serena van der Woodsen, Gossip Girl
Relaxed and bohemian, Serena is the polar opposite of Blair’s classically refined style. Give this girl some skinny jeans, boots and a tank, and she’s good to go. While Blair adorns her school uniform with structured skirts and Victorian blouses, Serena keeps it chic and simple with cropped jackets, a plaid mini and her ubiquitous boots. But that’s not to say Serena doesn’t have a glam side and a predilection for minidresses. She knows when to amp it up for a night out like with the studded minidress and pumps she wore for her date with Dan.

1.) Blair Waldorf, Gossip Girl
Any member of the Gossip Girl cast could be on this list, except for maybe Chuck due to that suspect basketball outfit. When you have a show dressed by Patricia Field’s assistant costume designer from Sex and the City, it’s pretty much guaranteed that everyone is going to look fabulous. But the crown has to go to the show’s two leading ladies. Little J (Taylor Momsen) only dreams of being as richly stylish as Blair (Leighton Meester) and Serena (Blake Lively).

Blair’s wardrobe is a outward reflection of her dueling personalities. She’s the conservative, high society princess, but underneath the veneer things are more rocky than she lets on. Family drama, food issues and enough boy drama to fuel the “Gossip Girl” blog for months. She plays the prim and proper role with structured blazers, tailored shorts, classy dresses and unexpected capes, but her fiery side comes out in bright red tights and her signature piece, ribbons as headbands. Matching mixed styles never looked so good.

For three months we labored through a very dry TV landscape full of reruns and retro-nostalgic reality shows, but it’s true what they say. Time, or in this case, the strike, does make the heart grow fonder. We’re giddy with anticipation for our favorite shows to come back with new episodes. Here’s a peek at what has us so excited for spring and why.

Last we saw of Gossip Girl, things had changed quite dramatically for many of the characters. Nate and Blair broke up after the truth about Chuck and Blair came out. Serena and Dan exchanged “I love yous.” And perhaps most importantly, Jenny Humphrey rose up the social ladder as Blair was knocked down. But something tells us Blair isn’t going to take this lying down. Little J better watch out when new episodes return because Blair is going to be gunning to take down the snitch who spilled the beans about her and Chuck to Nate and knocked her off the social pedestal. As Gossip Girl’s parting words last episode — “Wonder who’s going down next? Everybody, if B has anything to say about it.” — hint, there’s going to be plenty of payback drama come April 21.

The Winchester brothers received an early renewal for a fourth season, so fans no longer have to worry about the fate of Supernatural, but Dean’s fate is another story. The series returns on April 24 with a humorous rip on Ghost Hunters-type shows, but things will soon turn serious as Dean’s last day falls on the season finale. The writers promise that getting Dean out of the crossroads deal he made to bring back Sam won’t be any easy task. No loopholes in this contract. Between Dean’s looming last day and the introduction of a new enemy, the powerful Lilith, out for Sam’s head, viewers are in for a climactic showdown.

Word is that Alicia Silverstone is joining the cast of How I Met Your Mother for a multi-episode arc as a love interest for Ted, which begs the question, “Are we finally going to meet the title’s mother this season?” We can’t wait to find out the answer when the underappreciated comedy returns March 17 with nine new episodes, and we have plenty of other burning questions. Will the writers finally concede that Robin and Barney are completely hot for each other? Whatever happened to the home in “Dowisetrepla” that Lily and Marshall bought despite Lily’s mysteriously forgotten credit card debt? And if this is the last season – shamefully, the show still hasn’t been renewed – where will our gang of friends end up?

When the strike started, The Office gang was getting ready to shoot an episode that Jenna Fischer called “the funniest of the year.” The new half hour, which revolves around Jan and Michael having some of the Dunder Mifflin couples over for a dinner party, reportedly had the cast in stitches during a read-through and we can imagine why. Pam and Jim are a given invitee, but pondering who might round out the dinner table – so-odd-it’s-right pair Kelly and Darryl? Will Angela bring Dwight or Andy? — has us in delighted anticipation for The Office‘s return on April 10. Then there’s the question of how the writers will deal with the very pregnant Angela Kinsey. Unless the show jumps forward in time, the crew will most likely be forced to hide Angela’s growing tummy behind desks and chairs. Luckily, those are in no short supply on set and they fit in much better than enormously large purses.

Fans will have to wait a bit longer – until fall – for the return of Heroes, but we simply can’t wait to see if the show has learned anything from the season two backlash. Perhaps a nice, long break is exactly what the series needs to turn itself around.

We also can’t wait for…

Bones (April 14) to see the much delayed post-kiss episode.

Brothers & Sisters (April 20) to find out Rebecca’s paternity once and for all.

Desperate Housewives (April 13) and new guest stars Gary Cole and The O.C.‘s Chris Carmack.

Grey’s Anatomy (April 24) and Addison’s return to Seattle Grace. Maybe it’s just Oceanside Wellness that’s sucking all the awesome out of her.

Scrubs (April 10) and what may or may not be its final season. Either way, the show is going big with a Princess Bride-inspired fairytale episode directed by Zach Braff that features the Janitor as a giant and J.D. as the village idiot.
